Maka is reducing his comic collection: Akira

Post by Maka »

Dear UYDers,

I'm a little astonished on how many comics I have collected over the last 25 years. I look at all these comics that have brought me joy but now sit in boxes, rarely looked at, in my garage. 1000s. Crazy. Anyways, one man's comics of yesterday, maybe one another persons treasure today. I thought I would make lists here and see if there is any interest before I go the eBay route. So here's the first list.

I remember watching the animated Akira in 1988. I was blown away by the animation. So I attempted to collect the comic. Epic was publishing the english translations. My parents were living in Japan at the tim, so I picked up some English issues (4-9) at a Japanese book store while visiting them. They came in a cardboard slipcase (which I still have) and a English to Japanese transition "bilingual booklet". The only difference, that I can tell with these versions is there is no price on the cover. I also have a complete collection of the KC Japanese language collections (1-6) which collects the whole series (but in Japanese).

So here are the issues I have:

1 (I have two issues of #1)
2-4
4-9 (two slipcases with one collecting issues 4-6 and the other 7-9. Both come with their Bilingual Booklet #2 & #3)
8
10-22
24-29
32-38
(So this set is missing issues #23, 30, & 31)

The KC Japanese collections 1-6 & an extra copy of #5.

Because I am trying to get clear my boxes, I want to sell this as a set.

Here's what I'm looking for:

The English set (including the Japanese slipcases for issues 4-9), a total of #37 issues $120 (which is less than cover but still not exactly spare change).
The KC Japanese set of 7 books (#5 has two issues) = $60 (which is less than I paid for them, especially considering I bought 1-4 in Japan :))

If you buy both sets, I'll throw in free shipping.

I have no idea how much shipping will cost for this. Books are heavy but we can do media mail.
I have no idea about international shipping. If you are international we will have to figure it out.

If you want to trade UY collectables to reduce the price, I'm willing to consider that. I recently sold some UY comics to someone here on the board and that felt good.

The condition of the comics are very good (as in excellent but not as in Overstreet grading). I had the majority in bags (only the japanese box sets, issues 36-38, and the KC books not in bags). They were in comic short boxes, and I was a collector, so I cared about condition a LOT. :) There is some silver fish (darn those silver fish) damage to the spines of issues 7-9 [7 getting being the worst a couple of centimeters at the top spine and an inch or so on the bottom of the spine - painful) and 38 has just a little bit chipped at the top spine). The book covers and the insides are beautiful.

I would love to find these comics a good home. I realize most Akira / Otomo fans probably already have these books. But it was fun to write this up and it never hurts to ask. I'll be posting other comic sets throughout the year. Thanks for reading!

I can post pictures later but it may be a while. Let me know if you are interested in pictures, and that might motivate me more. :)

Peace, maka

Akira is a great story. It was one of the early titles that got me started. I still have my copies.... but like you, in boxes.

Good luck in parting out your collection!

Thanks Maichan,

This process will be fun. Even if I don't sell any comics here, I am going to look at my comics again and think about my life when I got them. Most of these comics have been in my boxes for over a decade or two. Fortunately, there is no need or timeline to unload them. :)

I think I will start loading up covers of these comics (as I list them) at the a new tumblr blog I started here: https://www.tumblr.com/blog/comixcovers

Peace, maka
