Usagi stage play is coming to Portland, OR

Post by Stan Sakai »

I haven't heard the official word, but, according to Editor Diana, the UY stage play that debuted in London, will be having a run at the Portland Community College. I don't know the dates yet.

Does the play adapt any specific UY story?

It adapts "Samurai" for the most part, Usagi's journey from child into trained samurai via the teachings of Katsuichi-sensei. There are a few tweaks, Mariko has a much more prominent role for example (which is a good thing imo, as it provides a strong female lead too), and we actually meet Usagi's mother (as when the play starts, his father has already been killed by Lord Hikiji), but it stays pretty faithful. The stage also had compartments and props hidden away for various scenes, together with the shadow backgrounds and authentic music. You can see some of the photos (surreptitiously) taken by myself from the London show here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/mayhemers ... 9192529649 .

Totally down for a road trip. It's only 14 hrs from L.A. to Portland. Found a few videos of the play on youtube, you guys should check them out if you haven't seen them:

I thoroughly recommend the show!

The production was very clever and the cast were superb!

It was entertaining from the moment we walked through the door until the very end, and remained largely faithful to Stan's story

I also thought they made very clever use of projectors and the live percussion was absolutely superb and really helped build the atmosphere

As a fan I loved it!

I did think the pace could have been slightly quicker, so it felt it was aimed more at children than adults. But then I liken this to the slower pace of Batman Begins where you have to develop the characters and work through the training

Perhaps if it is successful the sequel could be Grasscutter with a larger cast? :D Jei on stage would be brilliant (imo) (And Ninjas!!) 8)

I am happy for anyone who can attend this.I wrote about this production in my paper without actually having the opportunity to watch it myself...I feel let down that it doesn't look like it will tour europe as well;(....I mean we had it so close in range and germany is a great haven for theater productions..I hope it will be shown here too someday..
in the meantime, you guys have a great time!:)

Here's a link to the webpage for the Usagi Stage Play: http://www.pcc.edu/about/theatre/ . It even has a cast list! Unfortunately there is no Gen or Zato-Ino but there is a Mole! I'm assuming it's a ninja mole. Please let me know if anyone really is interested in doing a road trip. Maybe we could go visit Dark Horse Comics ... Google says its 16 min away in Milwaukie, Oregon, birth place of the Bing Cherry.

I don't know if I can realistically (I have to check with the fam and work schedule) do a road trip but I am considering it (maybe carpool, share the hotel and gas cost?). Is there one performance that most dojo members will be going to? There is also a lot of cool things to see in Portland, so we could take a few moments to enjoy the city before heading home. Peace, maka

You can PM me or post here if you are interested.
