Who am I.

Post by Dranatha »

I am 33.

I grew up in South Dakota. The nearest comic shop was 60 miles away. At 14 I was an avid marital art fan (nearest school 40 miles away), I saw the cover of Critters #10 and was hooked.

I got a bachelor's degree from Grinnell College (Iowa) in Political Science, with an emphasis in Russian and Eastern European Studies. So naturally I got into the food business. I recieved my formal chef training at a Japanese teppan steak house in Des Moines. I was the only Howlee. The rest of the chefs were Japanese/Hawaiin. Later I started my own restaurants. Got married. Moved to So Cal.

Now I have 2 kids, a boy (age 2) and a daughter (age 1). I work for a restaurant equiptment company and handle all the sales at Disneyland.

Music: mostly '80's alternative, Brit rock.

Movies: anything with "real characters"

Games: I use to love gaming, but have not played anything since moving to So Cal.

Thanks for reading,

Dranatha

Who are we?

Post by Steve Hubbell »

Kon nichi wa,

I guess I should contribute to this posting finally...

41 as to a couple months ago.

I grew up and lived in Michigan most of my life, except for the few odd times I managed to escape. I lived in California, Florida, Missouri, Colorado, and a few other states for various periods of time. (Back to this later...)

I have been reading and collecting Usagi Yojimbo for a bit over ten years now, having started in the early Nineties. I have been reading Stan's lettering, on the other hand, for probably another six or seven years in the pages of Groo the Wanderer which I started reading in Eighty-five or Eighty-six.

Other current interests include Lone Wolf and Cub by Koike and Kojima (as well as Samurai Executioner, hopefully), novels by novels set in fuedal and Ancient Japan by Eiji Yoshikawa, Laura joh Rowland, I. J. Parker, Dorothy and Thomas Hoobler, Namioka Lensey, and any others I might stumble upon...

I have also aquired an interest in Jidae geki / samurai films, including the works of directors Akira Kurasawa, Masaki Kobayashi, and Hiroshi Inagaki and actors Toshiro Mifune, Shintaro Katsu, Tatsuya Nakadai, and Tomisaburo Wakayama.

Musical tastes include mainly rock music from the sixties to the present. Just bought Godsmack's newest and the new release by Dropbox. Favorite bands include Pink Floyd, U2, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Led Zep, etc.

Back to California... Sergio Aragones' character Groo was first published in late Eighty-two and Stan Sakai's character Usagi Yojimbo debuted in Eighty-four. I lived in the Santa Ana-Tustin-Irvine area during the summer of Eighty-two and again in Eighty-four. Just a weird coincedence...

Ah my first post.. I guess this is a good place to start. I am 20 years old and actually first discovered Usagi when I was about 5 or 6. I was a HUGE Turtles fan and as you guys know they made a Usagi Figure.. That was my first exposure ot the character.. The reason I came back to the character about a year ago was that he is a Samurai... I have always had a deep respect for Japanese culture. Usagi is a good way to learn more about Feudal Japan and its customs..

I'll come out of lurkdom...

Hey, I just turned 30 (so way back when you guys were all saying you were 29? yeah, I was 29 then too...)

I've been an Usagi Yojimbo reader for about 5 years now and a comics reader for about 15 (sorry, I was a little slow on the uptake).

I'm a 5th grade teacher. I went to Purdue for undergraduate school and Indiana U for grad school. I earned my Masters in Elementary Education about a year ago. I like to incorporate cartooning into my curriculum whenever I can. I'll be coming up on my 4th year of teaching. I also tutor and sometimes even give drawing lessons.

My hobbies include mountain biking, drawing, and I read like a maniac. My teams are the Reds, the Pacers, and the Colts (but the latter is just a default, as I'm not as big into football). If I have to pick an American League team, I go with the White Sox. I'm a history buff. And in my quest to be a lifelong learner, I started taking karate classes about a month ago. I love it, and it's good for this teacher to be learning something completely new. And it's quite a workout--I had no idea!

Anyway, it's good to see that I'm in such esteemed company!!

Well, I'll tell a few things about myself. This is the best and most polite forum out there so I do not mind.

I'm 32, single guy. I live in Massachusettes with my cat. I have no special training in anythign in particular. I've been a laborer, a retail assosiate alot (Don't know if I could ever go back to that and hope I never have to)....currently I am mailroom manager. Though in all honesty, the term manager is hardly anything official, a mis-label of what I really am. I do run the mailroom but am just a guy who works in the Accounts Payable department. The company isn't so large it needs more than one person in the mailroom. Which is just fine with me. I work and listen to any music I want to.

My taste in all mediums vary, be it video games, comic books, novels, movies and music. In my collection of movies I make rooms for samurai movies and even good old horror. In music my intrest, I listen to things like Beethoven all the way to Anthrax, and it doesn't stop there. Games, I like classic fantasy adventure and noisey first person shooters. It does no good to just grow up and loose intrest in that which you enjoy most. Learning is forever in a lifetime. I'm a firm believer that you can never know it all. I also like the old Samurai Showdown 1st, 2nd and 5th ones

As you can see I like Redwall and anyone reading any of my posts can see I like War of The Worlds as well. But I also enjoy Harry Turtledove's writing and I absolutly enjoy reading F Paul Wilson's writing.

Don't know when or how young I was when it started but, I have always had a facination for fantasy. Animal fantasy I have always been drawn to. When I grew up, I loved Disney's funny-animal version of Robin Hood. Watership Down scared the heck out of me when I was a kid, I still watched it though every time I saw it was on television. I'm a Transformers fan and the current G1 comic is a great comic to read.

Well, that's enough space taken up. NEXT......
