Homage to Katsuhiro Otomo

Post by Eltanin »

At the end of the month, there will be an exhibition dedicated to Katsuhiro Otomo (the author of Akira) in Angoulême.
The exhibition will be made of drawings by various artists in homage to Otomo and Akira, and a small book will be published for the occasion, containing all contributions.

Now, you might wonder how is this related to Usagi?
Well, here is the list of the authors contributing to the exhibition:

Virginie Augustin, Bannister, Dominique Bertail, Matthieu Bonhomme, Aleksi Briclot (An eye on I), Francesco Cattani, LRNZ, Merwan Chabane, Olivier Coipel, Luigi Critone, Simone D’Armini, Ludovic Debeurme, Benoît Feroumont, Manuele Fior, Juan Gimenez, Jurion joël, Jean-Philippe Kalonji, The Art of Viktor Kalvachev, Nicolas Keramidas, JungGi Kim, Olivier Ledroit, Stéphane Levallois, Li-An, Tanino Liberatore, Julien Loïs, Vincent mallié, Dilraj Mann Illustration, Stan Manoukian / Diary of Inhuman Species, Thierry Martin, Laureline Mattiussi, Hugues Micol, Timothée Montaigne, Nicolas Némiri, Vincent Perriot, Gloria Pizzilli, Victor Santos, Stan Sakai, Otto Schmidt Art, Guillaume Singelin, Jiro Taniguchi, Lucio Villani, and Vince.

I asked to the editor what will be the book price, and if it will be available from regular bookshops after the festival. I am waiting for a reply. In case the book won't be sold outside of the festival, I can pick some books for the Dojo members interested (and if that's the case, it will probably be better if I ship all the books to a single person in the USA who will then dispatch them to every american member in order to reduce shipping cost. I'm still cringing when I remember the shipping cost of a single book I sent to Steve).
Anyway, I'll let you know of what the editor replies. If the book is made available in bookshops after the show, it will probably be cheaper for you to just buy it on amazon.

I thought the completist Stan Sakai collectors among you might be interested by the news. :)

I'm curious to see Sensei's illustration. :D

Thank you for this news Eltanin.

I too am a fan of Akira, so I might just be interested in this book. Is there someplace online where we might learn more about the exhibition and the book?

If the book doesn't make it to Amazon, I would imagine that there is a good chance that Stuart Ng Books might get copies, so that might be an option for US collectors also.

This past year, I finally bought the last three issues of Akira I was missing. I loved the art when it first came out. I am looking forward to reading it completely. :)

It will be fun to see Stan and everyone's interpretation of the characters. I love collections like the Sakai Project that collect multiple artist on a common theme. It just shows how creativity is diverse and beauty comes in many forms, styles.

Peace, maka

Definitely interested in the book, even more so if it won't be available outside of the exhibition. Keep us informed Eltanin! :)

Since I know I will want a copy of this, I am more than willing to volunteer as a distribution point for sending copies to other U.S. members.

Stan Sakai's contribution has just been posted on the FB page of the Angoulême festival:

For those of you who don't have facebook, I repost the picture here:

That's a really different style than the one we are used to see in Usagi!

It's very interesting, indeed. But the more I look at it, the more I wonder if they didn't make a mistake with the author.

They made a mistake with the credits for the piece shown there, it is actually Stan Manoukian (as noted in the comments)

If you enlarge the illustration on the Facebook page, you can see the the S in the lower right corner pretty clearly, and the M somewhat less clearly.

If you do a google image search for Stan Manoukian, you will see a lot of images that are obviously of the same style as the image on Facebook.

I hope they did not make the same mistake in the credits for the tribute book.....

Now I feel ridiculous for initially thinking the drawing was by Stan Sakai. I thought he was experimenting a new style.

You never know, Stan might decide to start drawing superheroes or cheesecake pin-ups for all we know.....

pretty much what Mayhem said...
although I wonder if it will be available outwith the expo? just that I'll be in Paris at the end of next month, and if so this gives me the (flimsy) excuse I don't need to go take a look at Album!
