CONTEST TIME!
As I stated earlier, I am doing an as-yet unannounced variant cover (this is not the Kong one). I did two rough sketches for it--one for myself to figure out the layout, composition and idea, and the other a more cleaned up version to show the client. The prize is the first of these sketches which has all my rough pencils under Uni-Ball pen inks.
The contest: The one who guesses which comic and issue the cover is for, is the winner. I will post clues at random times and if you figure out the publisher and comic and is the first one to post the answer, you win. The trick is that each of you will have only one chance to give an answer so you have to be confident that you know it, however if you figured it out then someone else might have also done so. Got it? This might actually be easier to figure out than you suspect, if you have the resources.
Simple right? However, if we come across any unforeseen snags, then I will be the final arbiter of who wins. In other words, I will make up additional rules as needed.
Clue #1:
I have never worked on this/these book(s) or with this/these character(s) before.

Re: CONTEST TIME!
Ha ha ha! We already have a winner. Betty & Veronica #1 from Archie Comics. This is a store variant for Atlantis Fantasyworld in Santa Cruz, CA, and is limited to 500 copies.
As I said, it might be easy if you had the resources. By "resources", I meant the Diamond Previews Catalogue which lists all the upcoming comics and related merchandise. I had already said that the variant would be out at the San Diego Con, and the April catalogue listed all the books coming out in July and the exact dates. B&V has a lot of variant covers, but mine was not listed. As I posted, it was "as-yet unannounced".
Congratulations, Steve Hubbell. Besides the sketch, I will also send you a copy of the comic.

Re: CONTEST TIME!
Awesome!
Speaking of SDCC, will there be a new Usagi Yojimbo Sketchbook this year?

Re: CONTEST TIME!
Steve PM-ed me and said he took an even easier route. I had announce the exact series and issue number on the forum a couple of weeks ago. I had forgotten I had done that. I guess this contest was even easier than I thought. My birthday was yesterday, and I'm getting even more forgetful in my old age.

I don't know. I certainly have enough material for one (including the B&V variant cover). It all depends if Daniel can put one together by then.Steve Hubbell wrote:

Re: CONTEST TIME!
Thanks for the neat contest! And congrats, Steve^_^ I bet it will be a really cool piece! (Mr. Sakai drawing Betty and Veronica? How can that not be completely awesome?!!) Are you going to post a pic here when you get the chance? It would be great to see it, but alas, I'm pretty sure there aren't any Atlantis Fantasyworlds here in Central Florida~_~

Re: CONTEST TIME!
Indeed, which is why I knew the answer as soon as I read the question tooStan Sakai wrote:Steve PM-ed me and said he took an even easier route. (but obviously Steve had gotten there way before I was even on to see the contest)
Will you have copies of the B&V variant to sell at SDCC Stan? What about the Kong variant?
With a breeze comes a storm, but then you'll all be washed away...

Re: CONTEST TIME!
Congrats Steve! Do you have some sort of app on your phone that notifies you when Stan posts?
I didn't even know this contest took place.
You can see some of the other variant covers here:

I could swear I saw a Betty and Veronica cover by Allison Sohn at Megacon. Maybe it was for issue 2?

Re: CONTEST TIME!
Well, they don't list Stan either, so if he isn't mentioned it's possible Allison has one that isn't listed here either as well. Perhaps, like Stan, she's doing a store specific variant?Gaffey wrote:You can see some of the other variant covers here:

Re: CONTEST TIME!
That is probably correct. My variant is for Atlantis Fantasyworld in Santa Cruz, CA. They are having 500 copies printed with my variant and I will be given about 50 of them. I expect to have my copies at San Diego.jabba359 wrote: Well, they don't list Stan either, so if he isn't mentioned it's possible Allison has one that isn't listed here either as well. Frankly, I was concerned because my version of Betty and Veronica did not look like Archie's established look for them. However, I'm relieved after seeing the other artists' take on those characters.
