Orange County School of Arts
I will be a part of a cartoonists panel conducted at the Orange County School of the Arts in Southern California on Saturday, October9, 2-5 pm. I doubt we'll be conducting a panel for the entire time.
Some of the other participants are: Sergio (Groo, Mad) Aragones, Jeff (Family Circus) Keane, Bill (Simpsons) Morrison, Jerry (Baby Blues, Zits) Scott, Greg (Luann) Evans, Scott (Flintstones) Shaw!, and Tom (Little Mermaid, Osmosis Jones) Sito.
The school is at 1010 Main St in Santa Ana. Admission is $25 which will go to support the school.

The event yesterday went very well. I was concerned whether we could fill up 3 hours, but we did it easily and could have gone on much longer. But then, I guess it's no surprise with nine cartoonists on stage.
The turnout was very nice. It was an easily planned event for the Orange County High School for the Arts, and they made some money. It was also a nice chance for cartoonists to get together.
There was a segment in which every cartoonist did a ten or fifteen minute presentation, then a question & answer period, followed by an autograph/sketching session ( I got a wonderful Jeff Keane drawing in my book of (of course) Little Jeffy from Family Circus).
There was a screen onstage that showed powerpoint images, video, and a "overhead projector-type" device on which we could draw while seated. My favorite part was the Q&A segment. If there was a question about the lack of women in cartooning, someone would answer it while Sergio drew a gag about it on the screen. Likewise, about how much a cartoonist makes--someone answers while Sergio does a drawing. Even after knowing Sergio for 25 years, it's still fascinating to watch him draw.
We each even received a little gift of appreciation--a long sleeve school t-shirt (very nice) and a large bottle of beer! When Steve McGarry, who co-ordinated this event and has two sons in the school, was asked what was an appropriate gift to give, he told them, "They're cartoonists. Give them booze."
By the way, I don't drink--never acquired a taste for that stuff.

I would have loved to have seen an event like that. Sergio is one of the first cartoonists I discovered as a child. I loved the Mad margins! I had several paperback books of his cartoons that I would sit and copy for hours. Then one day I discovered I could just think of something and draw it. At first the drawings looked very Sergio-esque--- well, as much as close to it as a kid could get.

Wow--if I could have attended, I would have. Look at that guest list!!!
Stan, of course, needs no mention in the first place because he's gracing them all with his presence.

Some say there's a fine line between genius and madmen. I think Sergio's is perforated.
Nah, I'm just kidding.
