I like to see things with a Japanese theme, so I go with Usagai Yojimbo Monogatari (or Usagai Yojimbo: Kakushu Monogatari - translated to UY: Assorted Tales)

Yes, unfortunately(?) the word monogatari does have a more recent modern link to a series of light novels, however the actual true origins of monogatari goes back way before the light novels were produced, so the novels are actually making use of the original term. In regards to Usagi, I think the term is very befitting given the context of when and where UY stories take place.

Monogatari is a literary form in traditional Japanese literature, an extended prose narrative tale comparable to the epic. Monogatari is closely tied to aspects of the oral tradition, and almost always relates a fictional or fictionalized story, even when retelling a historical event. The form was prominent around the 9th to 15th centuries, reaching a peak between the 10th and 11th centuries. According to the Fūyō Wakashū (1271), at least 198 monogatari existed by the 13th century. Of these, around forty still exist.

Encyclopaedia Britannica has this to say :

Monogatari, ( Japanese: “tale” or “narrative”) Japanese works of fiction, especially those written from the Heian to the Muromachi periods (794–1573).

Monogatari developed from the storytelling of women at court. During the Heian period (794–1185) men wrote in Chinese, and it was women who developed this form of Japanese prose. Some early monogatari, however, are believed to have been written by men under women’s names. Records describe 11th-century literary competitions where women prepared short monogatari for an audience.

The form has many subgenres. Uta monogatari (poem tales) are exemplified by the Ise monogatari (c. 980), consisting of 143 episodes, each containing one or more poems and a prose description of the circumstances of composition. Tsukuri monogatari (courtly romance) are exemplified by Murasaki Shikibu’s incomparable masterpiece, Genji monogatari (c. 1010). Perhaps the finest work in all of Japanese literature and the first important novel in the world, it tells of Prince Genji, remarkable not for his martial or political talents but for his amorous ones. The story is related in terms of the successive women Genji loves. Like other works of the genre, it incorporates poems and verse fragments.

As the militaristic samurai came to power at the end of the 12th century, women lost favour, and gunki monogatari (military tales) developed as a subgenre. The most famous of the military tales is Heike monogatari, which describes the warfare between two families; its lengthy, varied text reflects its origins as an improvised story told by priest-entertainers. Later works told of medieval warlords and clan vendettas.

Other types of monogatari include rekishi monogatari (historical tales), exemplified by the Ōkagami, and setsuwa monogatari (didactic tales) originating in Buddhist legends but in their secular form often humorous and earthy.

I was introduced to the word "monogatari" through "Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari", the original Japanese name for what we know as "River City Ransom"

One more vote here for "Monogotari." I like it simply because I didn't know the word, and if I were a new reader, it would make me wonder what the book is all about ... much like "Usagi Yojimbo" did for me back in 1987

I'm also glad to hear that Yokai will get the omnibus treatment. Those color pages are super beautiful work, and I am looking forward to seeing them reproduced at a larger scale.

I'd also like to say that the four Saga volumes to date are just incredible ... I'm very happy with these books, especially the inclusion of color, and look forward to many re-reads.

Monogatari is a great choice, and has a long history of usage in both Japanese literature and cinema, and Kakushu Monogatari (assorted tales) would fit very well.

I would like to throw this idea out there as well...

Usagi Yojimbo: Ōku no sedai (Many Generations) since the three story arcs cover three somewhat different generations. It would even be better still if Stan's Terry Miyamoto mystery story could be included in it as well.

I think 'Legends' blends well with the ongoing 'Saga' as well. It sounds right next to that. That said, I also really like the suggestions of Japanese names, I guess the only fear is alienating newcomers?

Anyway, I'm really proud that you're going with 'Legends' even if I perhaps wasn't the first one to suggest it (if I was I'll happily settle for royalties, accolades and a parade).

With work on the cover soon to commence, I'd imagine that an early next year release date seems probable.
