What I liked about writing this fan fiction was being able to include the 'secondary' characters that Stan has introduced over the years.

And this allowed me to expand (in my own small way) their characterization.

Case in point is with the latest chapter and having Tajima, Tomoe's brother taking on a significant role in defending Geishu.

Can any of us wonder what it would be like to be the brother of Lady Tomoe, especially in the context of Ancient Japan?

Srsly, that would be quite difficult to endure, let alone accept. You would be forever in the shadow of a woman.

I've always wondered how Tajima thought of about that. But with this story I was able to give his concerns a voice.

Chapter 21

Hell comes the Geishu.

The Shadow Lord has unleashed his master stroke.

You know, I hope that in the actual series, Horikawa gets actual development and depth. So far, he's appearing like the steriotypical trecherous advisor. Remember when he suggested to Noriyuki that he do nothing to try to help Tomoe? This makes me think he was hoping that she would get infected with the plague and die.

If you're interested in Horikawa the latest chapter has him featured quite prominently near the end.

No that wont happen for a long time! Right near the end of the story and we're not even half way yet.

Okay, I really didn't like the fact that Chapter 21 was so long. Like ginormically long.

So I found a point where there was a transition from the battle to the aftermath and cut it there.

Pretty much half way.

Another thing I liked about writing this fan-fiction is that I was able to introduce certain aspects that the original story hasn't.

Case in point...blood.

Okay, we can all admit that Usagi kills a lot of ppl. Like Wolverine levels of killing really.

However we never really see a lot of blood. But then Usagi has been geared toward younger (and young at heart) readers since its inception.

Well, I went full on horror-show with the latest chapter. I literally drenched the characters in blood.

They killed so many people in one sitting that they had to get some of the goo on them.

I'm especially proud of how Tomoe's hair was so saturated with blood that she couldn't run her hands through it.

Heh.

I felt it was necessary to be so graphic to show just how terrible the carnage was, of how desperate the situation was for the Geishu. If Noriyuki hadn't had the foresight to bring in more samurai his clan would have been destroyed by the Shadow Lord.

Beside battle scenes are bloody good fun to write.

How Noriyuki subjected him to the humiliation of doing a mortician's job and then forced him to live with that humiliation for the rest of his life.

Well the only thing lower than handling corpses was cowardice in battle.

So Horikawa made his bed now he has to lie in it.

Yes, but to me, handling corpses sounds like something that someone's gotta do. Like scrubbing the toilets.
