Dear UYDers,

As the new year start up, I will continue my challenge to reduce my comic / graphic novel selection that I've bought since 1988. Some items aren't worth selling on eBay, so I'll be offering them here at a discount price + shipping. Let me know if you are interested. Let's start with:

OIL AND WATER By Steve Duin and Shannon Wheeler (Too Much Coffee Man).
Price $0 + $5 s/h. Total cost: $5
Original price: $19.99

Hardcover, first printing 2011. Like new but it has my name and phone number taped on the inside cover. I brought these to work to loan to colleagues and students. No one wanted to borrow this one. Go figure.

Description (https://www.shannonleowheeler.com/oil-and-water): When ten Oregonians travel to the Gulf Coast in August 2010 to plumb the devastation wrought by the Deepwater Horizon spill, they discover that “Oil and Water” is just the first of the insoluble contradictions. Between the tarred sands of Grand Isle and the fouled waters of the Louisiana bayou, they come to find out that Gulf Coast residents are economically dependent upon the very industry that is wreaking havoc on their environment. In the shadow of the greatest ecological disaster of our time, they are forced to reassess their roles as witness, critic and environmental steward.

In this 144-page graphic novel —— written by Steve Duin, a columnist for The Oregonian, and illustrated by Eisner-winning New Yorker cartoonist Shannon Wheeler —— readers will tour the shark-pocked beach at Grand Isle with the local head of Homeland Security; step aboard the crabbing boat of a 20-year-old Mississippian who works 16-hour days and spends his nights dreaming of M.I.T.; enter the “Hot Zone” where volunteers work desperately to save brown pelicans drenched in British petroleum; and hear shrimpers, Vietnamese and good ol’ boys alike, describe what happens to their livelihood when 200 million gallons of oil flood the scene. The readers’ perspective on what hope and what mission remains along a ravaged coastline, and one awash in both seafood and oil, will be changed as irrevocably as that of these ten Oregonians."

Peace, Maka

Powers: Who Killed Retro Girl ?
3rd printing.

$0 + $5 shipping in the US.

Original cover price is $21.95.

I bought this because my LCBS said they were bringing BMB to a signing. I really haven’t read any Bendis so I asked for a recommendation. My friend Jim said the owner loves Powers so I bought the first trade. It was fun but Not something I’m looking to hold on too.

Peace, maka

I been listing on eBay again. I seem to be pricing them right as auction I’ve posted has sold. I try to list a graphic novels and series set of comics (so two auctions a week) on Thursdays at 5. It’s a fun challenge to write a description of what I liked or bought the comics. If you are interested here’s the latest (two end on Sunday and have nice bids :)). https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?sid=mak ... 561.l49496

Hey maka,

Do you ever have non paying bidders or people trying to get refunds? I'm considering selling off most of my collected editions and I was thinking about going the eBay route for some but I really don't want to deal with people not paying/complaining/trying to scam me (book never arrived!). I've already sent 30+ hardcovers/books to MCS (trying out their consignment service for books over $50). My local comic shop will give me $5 credit for every trade I have so I have options there, but I'll still have a couple hundred hardcovers to get rid of. I think I'm going to try and get my collection down to 200 "must have" books instead of 800 dust collectors.

Thanks

Dear Gaffey,

I had about 400-500 sales total (comics and M:TG cards) on eBay since they formed. I would say I have took two refunds during that time (said the comics or graphic novels were damage in the mail. I have been ripped off one time where I bought a M:TG card and they sent me an empty envelop. But overall, it's been a good way to pass on my collection.

That said, I do it for the fun of it more than the money of it. It takes a long time to write up my auction descriptions (I just like to write), package the comics/graphic novels, label them, take them to the USPS and pay for them, send the buyer the tracking number, etc. I am not making minimum wage for sure. :D Like I said somewhere else, I typically lose money on these auctions compared to what I paid for the comics/graphic novels. But the goal is to read and enjoy the comics, have fun writing the auction description and determining what price I think they can sell for, making someone else feel like they got a good deal, and reducing the amount of stuff my family will have to get rid of (and the reduce the amount of guilt of throwing away Dad's comics) when I pass on.

The library is a fine place to donate comics/graphic but get ready if you see them in library $2 sales bin.

Good luck. Peace, maka

Only one scam? People on YouTube make it sound like it's a monthly occurrence. :?

I guess if I'm being honest I don't see myself taking pictures, writing descriptions, packing books and going to the post office over and over again for 600 books. I dread going there when I do the monthly giveaways and I'm always afraid the books are going to arrive damaged even though they're free! Not good for the old ticker.

Thanks for the thorough reply!

I changed my strategy about reducing my comics and graphic novels. I decided to donate the profits to my local Santa Barbara Rescue Mission. SBRM.org They help our brothers and sisters get off the streets by providing them housing, meals, counseling, and trainings. They help them with addictions and drug abuse and mental illness.

eBay Charity pays the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission directly and I do get a donation receipt that I can apply to my taxes. I offer free shipping too. All 100% goes to the nonprofit.

Here’s the latest auctions. https://ebay.us/m/qxS5JM

Thanks for looking. Peace, maka
