Does Sakai-Sensei do commissions at cons?

Post by Takeda Shingen »

As I said in a previous post, I'll be going to San Diego this year for the first time. Honestly, I'm making the trip from Florida to California almost solely to meet Mr. Sakai. I was curious, does he do commissions at cons?

I don't necessarilly mean something huge and super-detailed, but something a little nicer than the typical con "quick sketch." I certainly have no problem paying for it. I just really hope that I can get something to add to my sketchbook from him.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes he does actually, if you ask nicely. I've seen Stan do some very nice better-than-average con sketches. Maybe if you send him a PM asking what you want he'll know when you get to the con. Check out this pic for an example:

As far as full-on commissions, I don't think he does those anymore, at least I haven't seen him doing them at the con. Way back in the day he used to. Drawings were only $25 per character back when I got my first commission in 1988 (a cool Usagi/Shingen team up scene). He would do them at the con, and it was amazing to watch. It's a totally different experience than watching him do quick sketches. I wish I had a video camera back then!!! I remember standing there watching him for what seemed hours, and then went I got home I'd remember how he started, the pen strokes he used and tried to imitate them. He'd do commissions almost all day long. It was awesome. I think Stan is so swamped selling his UY stash, signing books, doing sketches, appearing at signings, hanging out with the UYD, talking at panels, and keeping tabs on his kids that I don't think he even has the time!

when stan came to Spain he didn't do commissions and he made for me three sketches. Also, here in Spain is bad-seen if the authors do commissions.

Yes, artists in Europe do not do commissions at cons. Neal Adams was charging for even quick sketches in Madrid. When I asked Jordi Bernet (artist of Torpedo) for a drawing in my sketchbook, he said, "NO, NO! Because he charges for drawings!" When it was explained to him that it was Neal, and not me that was charging, he said, "Yes, I will do a drawing for Sakai, but if Adams wants a drawing it will be 100 Euros."

Bernet is really a nice man. We got along quite well, despite the fact we do not speak each other's languages.

But yes, I usually do accept commissions, but only on the first and second days of the con. By then, I'm filled up.

I will still do those free quick sketches throughout the con, though. I just ask that you supply the paper, and they be personalized.

If you have something specific in mind, the best way to go is to e-mail me via the Dojo and let me know what you want.

Stan also brings pre-done pin-ups to the con. And published covers.

Also if you're missing that special item (previous con poster, giveaway,

hardcover), Stan usually can dig one up and bring it. Make sure you

identify yourself to Stan, since he LOVES to meet all DojoBoard

members !!!!

Cover art? Wow... What do the covers usually range in price? I must own one.. :)

Also, thank you VERY much for the reply, Stan. You have no idea how much my daughter and I are looking forward to meeting you. She's learning to read with Usagi and is enjoying each and every issue. I'm going to try to find you first thing in hopes of getting a commission done. I'm not sure exactly what I would like, but I should be able to figure it out soon.

I look forward to meeting not only you, but all the other attending Dojo members.
