In the story, Usagi and Tomoe run into each other. My guess is that the tournament took place in the Mushu province where Usagi was born (Katsuichi-sensei doesn't mention that it will be a long way home when they leave).
Wasn't Tomoe born in the Geishu province? How did she get that far north? Maybe Katsuichi-sensei knows more about her than Usagi would suspect.
