A trivia contest with cool prizes...

Post by Steve Hubbell »

I recently came into some cool items which, unfortunately, are duplicates for my collection. While I don't mind buying things on Ebay once in a while, I don't want to sell stuff there. Also, considering the source, it would be down right rude... So I decided to use them as prizes.

On to the trivia contest  (This is for the real die-hards out there).

oops, I forgot to tell ya about the prizes...

As most of you know, Stan Sakai attended the 7th Salon Internacional del Tebeo de Madrid Expocomic 2004 (that's a mouthful) back in November.

First Correct response returned will win one of the Expocomic 2004 posters (8.25 X 11.75 inches) signed by Stan Sakai....

Second correct response returned will win one of the 1999 "Happy 15th Birthday, Usagi Yojimbo" posters (13 X 18 inches) signed by Stan Sakai....

Third correct response will win a set of the Usagi Yojimb 9 piece Trading Cards which includes one autographed card.

Please PM your responses to me directly...

Good Luck...
Way back in the August 1994 issue of Usagi Yojimbo (volume 2, issue 9), there appeared a back-up story called "Nilson 2199". This story featured a futuristic version of Stan's characters Nilson Groundthumper and Hermy.
This story was originally conceived several years earlier with differant lead characters.

What was the original title for this story ("Nilson 2199") and what were the names of the two characters which Nilson and Hermy replaced?

I know the answer to this but I'll be damned if I can remember! Bugger... time to go research! :P

I don't know if it is a lack of response due to the question being too difficult or from a lack of interest, but there has only been a couple attempts to win these autographed posters.

If there isn't any more response in the next couple days, I will post a new question, hopefully one that does not prove to be so difficult.

Dear Steve,
You have me stumped on this one.
I hope you will tell the correct answer eventually.
It was nice to get the book out and see Usagi / Nilson / Hermy in color.
Thank you for the fun!
Best wishes to all.

The correct answer to this question is found in the 1991 Amazing Heroes interview of Stan Sakai. In issue #187 of Amazing Heroes, there is an image reproducing the first page of a story called "Ranger" dated 1988, which features the characters of Jeena and Wart. This story was redrawn and published in 1994 with the characters of Nilson Groundthumper and Hermy replacing the original characters. Unfortunately, that was the only page of the "Ranger" story to be "published" as far as I know.

That story was recreated, pretty faithfully for Nilson 2199. I had a few short Ranger stories written out. Wart was replaced by a little robot.

Thanks for sponsoring this contest, Steve. It has been quite a while since we had one of these in the Dojo. One of those we had was a "find the message to Todd" hidden in one of the Usagi stories. We should do them more often. I hope there was a winner.

unfortunately, no one came up with the correct answer to this question, but I'm feeling more confident that someone will be able to come up with the answer to the new one.
