What do you think is the best anime?
Yep, here we go again. Time for another knock-down, drag-out fight over what's the best!
Actually, I should admit that I have trouble picking out ONE anime that is superior to them all. All anime have diffrent merits, so none are exactly the same.
However, there are a few, I believe, that stand head-and-shoulders above the rest. Here are mine.
5. Tenchi Muyo (TV and OAVs)- This is probably the best example of a contemporary classic in modern anime. This ingenious odyssey of a young man and his alien female friends is never boring.....EVER. It also has the uncanny ability to go from depressing to corny in 0.6 seconds!
4. Princess Monoke- Nope, didn't take long for a Miyazaki film to appear! This ingenious tale of industry versus environmentalism in feudal japan in one of Miyazaki's best films. Plus, who can forget the demon possesed warthog with blood pouring out of its mouth?
3. Akira- Need I say more? This ultra-violent cyberpunk allegory of the dangers of humanity trying to master powers it doesn't understand is a real treat, a deep tale with multiple layers of meaning.
2. Jungle Emperor Leo- I'm a huge Osamu Tezuka fan, as you all know by now. This epic tale based on Tezuka's "Jungle Emperor" mythos is a real tear-jerker. If you cried when Bambi's mother was shot, look out! (of course, this doesn't hold a candle to the THE most heart-wrenching animated film in history, Grave of the Fireflies )
1. Nausiciaa of the Valley of the Wind- Its onlly fitting that I end this with Miyazaki's masterpeice, a delicious science fantasy set in the far future. In this film, earth is suffering from ecological hiroshima syndrom, and pockets of humans live in various kingdoms. At the same time, a poisonous, fungal forest is slowly choking the few remaing kingdoms in the land, and its up to Princess Nausicaa to save the world and, at the same time, reconnect with the love of nature that humans have lost.
So, there you have it. What's your opinion?

Wheeee, I'm the first one to answer to your post again
.
Okay, first of all, throwing series, OVAs and movies into the same bag doesn't seem right for me, so I'll pick one of each
. I also should add that there are way too many more shows I haven't seen than those that I have, so my picks probably aren't the best out there.
Series: A very special series for me was/is Neon Genesis Evangelion. I used to almost worship this series and I would defend it at all cost. Nowadays I think that the main plot is awesome, but the character development is a bit lacking and the end of the series is horrendous. Also, there have been a bunch of new series which have impressed me. One of them is Fullmetal Alchemist, which I absolutely loved. Right now I can't think of any other series that could beat this one, perhaps Samurai Champloo. "Jungle Wa Itsumo Hare Nochi Guu" and "Full Metal Panic!? Fumoffu" are probably the best comedies I've ever seen, along with "Excel Saga."
OVAs: I haven't seem many, but FLCL blew me away. Hideaki Anno has a very special way of telling stories, pretty weird but funny at the same time. Currently he's working on Gunbusters, an OVA of which I have only seen the first episode, but it looks promising.
Movies: Miyazaki 0wNz0rZ everyone else in the planet. Mononoke Hime was amazing, but Spirited Away wins.
If we were a few years back, then I'd say that either Dragonball, Saint Seiya or Dai no Daibouken (Dragon Quest, in Spain and France it was called "The adventures of Fly") would be the best series ever. And if I were younger right now, I'd choose Naruto or Bleach.

My personal favorite is Hayao Miyazaki's "My Neighbor Totoro."Angelcake wrote:

I've always liked it's slow pacing, cuts to drying laundry, frogs, etc. that make it seem like a Japanese film. The Cat Bus is so cute. The girls seem so real in the coping with a move to a country, dealing with their sick mother in the hospital and complete belief and comfort in the supernatural. I also like that the father completely supports and believes in his daughters. It's one of the few positive father characters (where the father doesn't die) in animation that I've seen. And as a father of two girls under the age of 6, I find the the girls characters to be so close to real life.
My daughters love the film. We were at a holiday party a couple years ago and my friend asked if there any movie they could put on for the kids. She had the dvd of totoro, so she put it in. When the beginning song started, my almost two year old daughter jumped up with this big smile and started dancing around in circle giggling, "ahaaaaaa. ahaaaa."
Lastly, I like that it's a "bit autobiographical: Miyazaki's mother suffered for many years from spinal TB, and she was away from home for a long time." (See FAQ in the link above).
Peace,

But, I do remember fondly though, Tezuka's Princess Knight TV series. The last 25 or so episodes was one long story that wrapped up the entire series. That was the first time I had seen such an epic cartoon story.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Serial Experiments: Lain. It's not my favorite anime, but I do consider it to be the most artistic and well-done (at least considering what I've seen thus far). I echo the nomination of My Neighbor Totoro too. What a fantastic call for a return to innocence!
My all time favorite guilty pleasure is definitely Robotech: The Macross Saga, though. Yes, it's a mangled American version of an immitation of Mobile Suit Gundam, but I love the stories, characters, voices and music intimately. It's a perfect blending of sci-fi, war drama, and inter-personal soap opera that doesn't allow itself to sacrifice character for the sake of getting lost in the technology and plot developments. I also love the ever-changing dynamics (owed more to the original Macross than the Robotech version) in which beloved characters die without warning, general circumstances change with the day, and a major surprise/development occurs two thirds through the series that I won't reveal here, but I sure remember my astonished reaction of "There's no way that just happened!". Great storytelling all around.

My favorite is Usagi Yojimbo, though my second favorite would be Ranma 1/2. Not for any particular reason but just because it's the only other Manga/Anime series I've ever read.
I always found every episode really funny to read so I followed it all the way to the end (if it is really over that is...)
