Samurai Warrior screen shots

Post by scorpion »

Hi there!

Stumbling onto the Usagi Yojimbo Dojo, I found the Official Usagi Yojimbo Video Game Website, describing a game I got quite some time ago, when I got my first computer, the Commodore 64.

Image Image

I do remember having lots of fun with this game, figuring out how everything worked etc. (since I got the game with the computer, with no guide or anything) and, to my shame, I must admit that, until I stumbled onto this site, I never knew anything more about it than the video game. So naturally I will be at the comic book store tomorrow! :)

When I was browsing through the Spectrum and C64 screenshots of Samurai Warrior in the Video Game Image Gallery, I noticed that the C64 screenshots were actually those printed on the back cover.

Since I'm a regular (.?!) nut about the Commodore 64 and its software (even after 20 years since its development! :-P), I not only still use it, but also have some emulators installed and transferred some games from floppy disks to D64 files for use with the emulators, one game of which is -of course- Samurai Warrior, so I could keep on playing it (... it's true!).

I used CCS64 to make some screenshots, which I'd like to offer for consideration to place on the image gallery. WinVICE is another good emulator (especially the video emulation!). This MIDI file is, as far as I can find, the closest to the actual game music (file description). Original C64 music by Greg Holland.

PS. I preferred mailing all this over posting it, but I couldn't find any email address to send it to (that can ofcourse also mean that I didn't look hard enough :))...

Edit. I now realize that I should've placed this in the Usagi Yojimbo Dojo forum, I hope it can be removed.

The funny thing is that I have never played this game. I approved it based on a video tape. It did get really good reviews in the trade magazines when it came out.

Does anyone know whether the game would work on an iMac? Also, is it possible that the game could ever be rereleased, like as (computer game) promo at a convention or something? That would be cool! Anyway, will it work on an iMac? Anyone?

You must find a 64 emulator for the Mac. Try http://www.google.com/search?q=c64%20emulator%20mac for some links.

Trivia Note: The game was written & programmed by Paul Kidd, who was the creator behind the "Tank Vixens" comic series (drawn by Mike Sagara), and author of several fantasy novels.

Thank you for this information! However, after searching the net for any additional information about him having programmed Usagi Yojimbo, the only page that contains his name and mentiones this Commodore 64 game, is the videogame description on http://www.usagiyojimbo.com! Do you have any additional links for me, stating that Paul Kidd and him alone (as I think you meant) is responsible for design & programming...? Because I couldn't find any. Not through your link or any other page...!

Thanks :)

PS. I started reading the comics, now that I know they exist :P I found out that last year Usai Yojimbo started coming out translated in Dutch as well (I purchased the 1st four paperbacks), yay me :D

No. I didn't say he single-handedly did the thing. What I was saying was that he had a hand in it's creation, most likely in the game's storyline, and perhaps in the code-crunching as well.

As for Paul's own site, it looks like it's currently offline.

I did a bookstore signing in Haarlem last year. I was in an art exhibition in Brussels with Belgian artist Michetz and took a day tour to Amsterdam and Haarlem. I wish I could have spent more time in those two countries.

I bought the first 4 Dutch paperbacks and the second one contains an invitation to the Japanese Tower in Laken (Belgium). Too bad it was in April-September of last year... I'm glad to hear that the countries that look like dots on a globe aren't forgotten! :)

For the people who want to see drawings from Michetz, most pages I found are in French, but here is a link to some drawings (which you can order through this link)...
