Stan Sakai, creator and cartoonist of Usagi Yojimbo came and spoke to my class today. He demonstrated how to draw thumbnails, use basic shapes to create drawings, and how to use pencil and then ink over it.
I raised my hand to ask him a question. I said, “My students have a lot of drawing talent and are interested in becoming cartoonists. What advice do you have for them?”
Mr. Sakai gave a three part answer, “First of all carry a sketchbook and draw in it as much as you can. Second, draw from life. Don’t always copy other comic book artists. Learn how to draw things. You can take a class to do this where you can learn the basics of shape, line, and perspective. Third, show your work as much as possible. Show it to friends, family, artists, publishers, and editors. If you do these things you stand a good chance of becoming published.”
I really like what he said because I have my students carry a sketchbook, draw from life and they are taking a class… all the components are in place for them to have the opportunity to be a comic book artist!
If you’d like to go see Stan speak, he is presenting at the Seattle Public Library. Go check him out!
