Has anyone read or seen Kenshin? It's set on the Meiji era, and it's not as "serious" or dramatic as the others, but still it's a choice worth checking out.

i've seen Rurouni Kenshin, and it is definitely recommended! There was a brief reference to the meiji era in the back of the grasscutter graphic novel.

I love Kenshin! Others may know it as Samurai X. I really liked the series which as you said is quite light hearted, but then I saw the OVA which has a realistic style of animation and a much heavier story line. It is about how he got the X scar. That blew me away so much I don't know if i can go back to the series now 8)
