More Usagi RPG Books in the Works!
We have a number of supplements are planned for release in the coming months (much to the excitement of Usagi fans everywhere). Some of the supplements we are working on are listed below. Please note that all titles are working titles only and may change. Keep in mind, too, that this list is not exhaustive. And don't miss the Official UY:RPG Contest info below!
This supplement presents many of the monsters and supernatural critters that have appeared in the comics, written up for Instant Fuzion. This book will also include notes listing the appearances of these beasties in the comics, some background material and new supernatural powers that they possess, as well adventure seeds and notes on how to use them in your game. Very cool stuff!
Usagi Yojimbo: Friends & Allies
This supplement presents a number of NPCs (Non-Player Characters) that Usagi has befriended is his many adventures. You'll find Instant Fuzion stats for the characters along with background notes and interesting plot hooks for using them in your game, whether your group is using the player characters in the main book or their own, original characters! Also inside will be new Species and Jobs for the game!
Usagi Yojimbo: Villains!

Usagi Yojimbo RPG FAQ
A few people have written to us and asked us some questions about the book, mostly concerning the rules. We have put together a list of Frequently Asked Questions. You can check out the FAQ right here.
Gold Rush Games is sponsoring a contest among Usagi Yojimbo fans! We are looking for the best representation of Jei using the Instant Fuzion game system as published in the Usagi Yojimbo RPG. Think you know him best? Now is your chance to show us!
What We Need
Each contest entry must include the following:
Species Template: Wolf - This outlines the stat bonuses (or penalties) and one unique Special Ability for Wolf characters. Follow the examples for other species in the UY:RPG book.
Job Template - Do you think that Jei cannot be accurately described using one of the exising Jobs in the UY:RPG? Then we want to see a new one. Call it anything you want (just keep it short; "Stalker" and "Mad Killer" are cool, but "Insane Megalomaniac Who Would Be A Kami" is definitely out).
Stats & Skills - Write up Jei in two formats. First, give him whatever stats and skills you think he has based on his portrayal in the comics. Second, provide a second write-up using the character construction rules. Remember that you cannot exceed the number of points awarded to starting characters, and you will have to lower (or drop) many skills to make it "balanced" for starting PCs (that's what we had to do for the PC versions of the main characters in the book).
Background - This is probably the trickiest part. You have to provide us with a description of Jei and his background, as well as notes on how he interacts with people and how he could be used in a game. This should be 1,000 words or less. Keep in mind that we do have an editor, but your submission needs to be spell-checked and well-written. After all, part of what we're judging is your ability to write.
And the Winner Is...
The winning entry will be selected by Gold Rush Games and will be published in the Usagi Yojimbo: Villains! The author of the winning entry will have their name appear in the book credits and will receive two copies of the book when it is published! Three runners up will receive a copy of the book when it is released, and may have their versions of Jei posted on this web site.
Rules and Stuff
This is important stuff so be sure you read it. All entries must be original works and become the property of Gold Rush Games. Entries must be received by March 31, 1998. Entries may be submitted in electronic form (via email or diskette), but must conform to our standard submission guidelines(e.g., no Mac-formatted disks). No signed product release is required; submitting an entry for the contest constitutes acceptance of these rules and conditions.
Usagi Yojimbo RPG Uses New Fuzion Game System
Gold Rush Games was originally planning to use the Instant Hero game system from Hero Games. After the breakup between Hero Games and Iron Crown Ent., Hero Games joined with R. Talsorian Games, who became their new publisher. As a result of this new partnership, Hero Games and R. Talsorian began working on a new game system, which combined the best elements of the Hero System and RTG's Interlock game system (used in the Cyberpunk and Mekton RPGs).
Both Hero and RTG will be using Fuzion in their future products, including Champions: The New Millenium, Cyberpunk 3rd Edition and the Bubblegum Crisis RPG. GRG will also be using it in their chambara RPG, Sengoku. The Fuzion system is also completely compatible with the traditional 4th Edition Hero System and RTG's Interlock game system!
This new game system is extremely versatile and easy to learn. In addition, it has the advantage of thee varying levels of complexity, from very simple to moderately complex, allowing players and GMs to use whichever level they are comfortable with. GRG President/UYD-Daimyo Mark Arsenault was involved in the playtesting of the first draft of these rules in the Summer of 1996, and was quite impressed with the system and what it could do. He decided that the Fuzion system was exactly what GRG was looking for in terms of simplicity and expandability. As a result, GRG obtained permission to use Fuzion in the new Usagi Yojimbo RPG.
Because the Usagi Yojimbo RPG is Fuzion-Powered, so to speak, the game will be completely compatible with all other Fuzion-Powered games! So you can use your Usagi characters in a Bubblegum Crisis or Sengoku game, or vice versa! Imagine Priss teaming up with Tomoe Ame... Usagi going up against a Genom Super-Boomer... Or the Knight Sabers taking on Lord Hikiji... RYAAA!!!
About the Usagi Yojimbo RPG
The Usagi Yojimbo RPG is based on the characters appearing in the Usagi Yojimbo comic books by Stan Sakai. Players will be able to create original characters and adventures alongside characters from the comics -- including Gennosuke, the blustery rhino ronin bounty hunter; Zato Ino, the blind swords pig; Tomoe Ame, the beautiful she-cat samurai; and (of course) our favorite ronin rabbit -- or play the famous characters themselves. All of the major characters from the comic appear in the game and are described in game terms.
The game contains more than just the art and characters from the comic, however. There is new information provided about the various characters and storylines which have appeared in the comics, including:
-A complete map of Usagi's anthropomorphic 17th Century Japan, featuring all feudal provinces and key cities such as the city of Sendai, the Geishu and Mutsu Provinces, and Shimonoseki (the Battle of Dan-no-Ura).
-The 7-page Official Usagi Yojimbo Timeline written by UYD-Daimyo's Jared Smith, Mark Arsenault, Glenn Masuda, and UYD-Shogun Todd. ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING - This timeline itself is worth the cover price of the book alone! It tracks with great accuracy the continuity of UY, from the mythological creation of the Japanese islands, to the birth of Usagi, through every UY story published thus far, all the way up to the beginning of the GRASSCUTTER saga.
-The 5-page Official UY Character Index, compiled by Mark Arsenault, with contributions from Todd Shogun. This listing is complete up to UY #14! Every character with a name ever mentioned in UY appears in this listing, from Aburage to Zato-Ino.
-The Usagi Yojimbo Glossary. Yes, you read right -- translations of all the various Japanese words used in UY! There all here!
In addition to these features, the UY RPG also features an awesome new cover colored by Tom Luth and an 8-page UY back-up story "Hebi" co-starring Gennosuke, reprinted from the rare UY Book Seven Limited Edition Hardcover. Gold Rush Games worked closely with Stan Sakai, who oversaw the development of the source material (and provided some of it himself) in order to ensure that the product remained true to his vision of Usagi.
The material in the Usagi Yojimbo RPG book is, therefore, not only a game, but a valuable source of information about the Usagi universe. This is definitely a must-have product for Usagi fans. So head on down to your local comics shop and look for the Usagi Yojimbo Roleplaying Game, out now from Gold Rush Games.
